2024 Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance Welcomes New Board Members

The Paso Robles wine community came together on February 8th to celebrate and honor outstanding leaders in the industry. Alex and Monica Villicana were awarded the prestigious title of 2023 Paso Robles Wine Industry Persons of the Year at the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance (PRWCA) Annual Gala.

Throughout their years in the industry, Alex and Monica Villicana have shown unwavering dedication to the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA) and its community. They started Villicana Winery in 1993 and have been actively promoting the region and its wines ever since. The couple made the decision to permanently move to Paso Robles in 2001, where they continue to produce estate wines from their personally planted vineyard.

In addition to their winemaking endeavors, the Villicanas have also contributed to sustainability efforts in the region. In 2011, they established the first distillery in Paso Robles, Re:Find Distillery. The distillery has not only focused on creating premium grape-based spirits but has also been instrumental in upcycling discarded saignée from wineries. By reclaiming this valuable resource, they have helped reduce waste and create a more environmentally friendly wine industry.

Alex Villicana has been actively involved in various industry-related boards, bringing his winery and distillery perspective to the County Planning Commission as vice chair, the board of Travel Paso (as chairman), and the California Distillers Association (as president), among others. Monica Villicana has served as the vice president/treasurer of the Paso Robles Distillery Trail and has been passionate about providing opportunities for Cal Poly students to develop their skills in the industry.

Joel Peterson, executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, described Alex and Monica Villicana as “creative, innovative, kind, and natural leaders.” Their contributions to the region have been invaluable, and they are truly deserving of this recognition.

The PRWCA Annual Gala also marked the installation of the 2024 PRWCA Board of Directors. The newly appointed board members include Chloe Asseo, Josh Beckett, Cris Cherry, Randy Heinzen, Carole MacDonal, Noreen Martin, Molly Scott, Michelle Thacher, and Maggie Tillman. Jeff Strekas, who completed a two-year term, will be replaced by Michelle Thacher.

The Paso Robles wine community looks forward to the continued leadership and contributions of these dedicated individuals. With their expertise and passion, the region is poised for further growth and success in the years to come.
